KEEPING YOUR TILE CLEAN WHILE PUPPY POTTY TRAINING
When you become a dog owner you reap many rewards: companionship, loyalty and unconditional love. But even with the most lovable and loyal puppy, comes a messy, and sometimes smelly home—especially during those months in which you’re potty training your beloved pet. Our professional carpet and tile cleaning teams have some tips for you on how to keep your tile looking its best during the potty training stage.
Just like any other part of your home, your tiles require regular maintenance as you teach your puppy the “do’s” and “don’ts”. Here are some tile cleaning tips to keep your tiles stain-free and as good as new.
Tile Cleaning Tip #1: Redirect Your Puppy to Go Outside (and Minimize Risks of Accidents in the Home)
When you first bring your puppy home, you’ll be spending lots of time giving him or her love and affection. It’s easy to forget keeping your puppy indoors, day and night, can actually harm your floors.
The more time puppies spend inside the more there is an increase in the chance for it to have an accident on your beautiful tile floors.
The sooner you are able to train your puppy to go to the bathroom outside (as opposed to your beautiful kitchen tile) the easier potty training will be. The easiest way to do this is by keeping a close watch on your puppy at all times.
If he starts to go potty on your tiles, make a loud noise (so he’s paying attention) and scoop him up and place him on the grass in your backyard. One way to prevent accidents is to set an alarm for every 20 or 30 minutes. Take your puppy out each time whether you think they need to go potty or not. Regular trips outside will help encourage your puppy to know to go out when they have to pee and will prevent accidents from happening inside.
Additionally, never ‘reward’ your puppy with affection or treats when he’s tinkled on your titles! Sending mixed messages only delays the potty training process. Repeat, and continue to repeat until he’s learned where to go—and where not to!
Tile Cleaning Tip #2: Clean Up Your Puppy’s Mess as Soon as Possible
Whether it is carpet or tile you’re dealing with, the solution for a soiled floor is the same: clean up the mess as soon as you can! All you need is:
- Baking powder
- Paper towels
- White vinegar
Start by soaking up the puddle of urine with paper towels. Next, you’ll want to pour ½ cup of white vinegar onto the stain, leaving it to sit for about ten minutes.
Then, sprinkle about 2-3 tablespoons (depending on the size of the stain) onto the vinegar, which will cause some foaming to appear. After a few moments, wipe it away with some paper towels. Take a few paper towels that are damp with luke warm water, wipe up the stained area and you’re done!
Tile Cleaning Tip #3: A Foolproof Trick to Never Miss an Accident
As a dog owner, you probably wonder how to minimize those inevitable puppy accidents so that you can maintain beautiful tile. When it comes to your puppy, it’s all about observing and reacting—quickly!
When you’re away from home and your puppy is in the house, accidents can and will happen. So, it’s important to prevent as many accidents as possible when you are home. In fact, you can downright eliminate them by leashing your dog to your waist as soon as you get home!
This tactic is a very effective way to train your puppy that your tile is off-limits! As soon as you walk through your front door, get in the habit of leashing your puppy to your belt loop. No matter what age or breed, this is a foolproof way to expedite the potty training process, while keeping your tiles in tip-top shape! If he tries to pee on your tile, pull him away, scoop him up and place him outside. Repeat as needed.
It does take some time to potty train your puppy, and occasionally, accidents will happen. However, the more quickly you react and respond will make all the difference—and allow your puppy to learn that your tile is off-limits at all times!

Coping with Spring Allergies

When winter comes to an end, opening the windows to let some fresh air in can feel luxurious. However, for many of us, a nearly invisible enemy is waiting just outside. If you suffer from springtime allergies, you’re not alone. Our carpet cleaning service is here to help you find relief from common non-living allergens and enjoy a more comfortable home environment.
Understanding Allergy Symptoms
When plants blossom in the spring season, they produce and release tiny particles of pollen to fertilize other plants. The pollen produced by different varieties of trees, grasses, and flowers can be carried long distances by the wind and trigger symptoms in those who are allergic.
When you have an allergy to pollen, your immune system perceives those tiny pollen grains as a foreign substance to combat. In an effort to repel the particles, your body may react in a way that generates the following symptoms:
- Frequent sneezing
- Congested or runny nose
- Watery eyes
- An itching sensation in the mouth, eyes, or nose
- Skin irritation or a rash
Finding Relief From Spring Allergies
If allergies are affecting your quality of life, it’s important to make an appointment with a board-certified allergist who can design a treatment plan for your specific allergy. Following your doctor’s recommended treatment plan can definitely help relive allergy symptoms.
But did you know there are also several things you can do to limit your exposure to allergens and improve how you feel during allergy season. For example, you may choose to spend your time outdoors in between peak pollen times. Pollen counts are generally highest in the morning and at dusk, and are especially high on warm, windy days. When you do go out and about, opt to wear sunglasses and a hat to prevent having pollen come in contact with your eyes and getting stuck in your hair.
Because pollen can be tracked from the outdoors into your home environment, a space that should be your safe haven from allergens, it is important to take precautions throughout the spring season. We suggest taking the following steps to minimize allergens circulating in your home:
- Avoid opening windows, especially on high pollen count days
- Take off your shoes before entering the house
- Shower and wash your hair after going outside
- Change clothes after being outdoors
- Wash bed linens on a weekly basis
- Towel down pets before they come indoors
- Utilize a professional upholstery and carpet cleaning service
How Our Carpet Cleaning Service can Help You Deal with Allergens
At Chem-Dry, our goal isn’t only to help make your home look cleaner by giving your carpet and upholstery a deep clean. We also aim to make your home a healthier space that is more comfortable to live in. We are proud to offer upholstery and carpet cleaning services that help protect people who suffer from common allergies and enable them to find relief when they’re at home.
It’s important to keep in mind that your carpets and upholstered furniture act like an air filter in your home. When they are clogged with too much dust and dirt, more airborne particles will be left to circulate in the air. As a result, ensuring your carpets are regularly deep cleaned can help boost their performance and minimize airborne allergens in the space where you spend most of your time.
Our carpet cleaning service utilizes the Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process to remove 98.1% of common non-living allergens on average from carpet*. Wondering how we found this specific number? We had our core cleaning process tested by an independent laboratory to ensure we are doing our part to help people cope with allergies. We are proud to play an important role in keeping your home healthy and comfortable, so you can enjoy spring and the warmer weather.

5 Carpet Cleaning Tricks

Are you looking for a way to spruce up your carpets in between visits from your local Carpet Cleaning technician? Whether you’re hosting a party or simply want your home to feel extra fresh, there are a few simple carpet cleaning tricks to hold you over until you’re able to schedule a visit from the professionals who do it best.
Plus, these hacks are easy to execute with a few everyday ingredients you have on hand at home. They’ll make it easy for you to accomplish some last-minute carpet cleaning before your guests arrive.
Our Favorite Hacks for In Between Carpet Cleaning Visits
Get ready to jot down our technicians’ top hacks for getting your carpet looking its best in between scheduled deep cleans:
Tip 1: The Ice Cube Lifter
Rearranging furniture is a great way to give any room a new look and revitalized feel. Yet all too often you’ll notice heavy furniture has left deep imprints on your carpet that distract you from enjoying your space.
If you’ve tried to deal with these odd dents on your own, you’ve likely been stumped as to how you can get those small areas of your carpet back to their normal state after so much time under pressure. The answer will seem like magic once you give it a try.
Just put a regular ice cube on those annoying impressions and give it time to melt. Next, dab away the excess water with a white cotton cloth. Then, place another white towel down over the area and iron on top of it until the carpet fibers are nearly dry. This will leave them soft, pliable, and lifted up to their former state.
Tip #2: Nozzle Vacuuming for Shag Carpets
Shag carpets are in style again, but they’re just as tough to clean as ever. Although you may feel like this kind of carpet needs to be vacuumed extra frequently, vacuuming normally can cause shag fibers to become frizzy, loosen, and shed. This not only destroys the carpet, but can also cause a mess in your home.
Fortunately, there’s a way to keep your shag carpet clean without having to deal with constant shedding. Instead of using your vacuum as usual, get out the hose attachment to do more detailed vacuuming of your shag carpet. The concentrated nozzle will clean deep into the roots of the carpet without stressing its weave, resulting in less fiber loss and frizz.
Tip #3: Baking Soda Refresher
Baking soda is known as a cure-all for many problems around the house, and your carpets are no exception. If you feel your rugs and carpets are beginning to smell a bit musty but you don’t have time for a deep clean, give baking soda a try.
Add a few drops of citrus essential oils to a 16-ounce box of baking soda and sprinkle this mixture on the carpet, allowing it to rest for five or ten minutes. Then, vacuum up the power. You’ll be left with a carpet that both smells and looks fresh.
Tip #4: Oil Stain Solution
Baking soda doesn’t only boost freshness. It can also help alleviate the effects of an otherwise disastrous oil stain. Should you ever spill oil on a carpet or rug, it’s important to act quickly to absorb it.
It’s important to remember, rubbing the spot will only cause the oil to spread and make the stain even larger than before. Instead, soak up excess oil with baking soda.
Just apply a liberal amount of baking soda to the stained area and leave it until it is clear the power has absorbed the oil, creating a crusty texture. Vacuum up this mixture to reveal a significantly lighter stain. Then, as soon as you get the chance, reach out to a professional carpet cleaning service to help get the rest of the stain out.
Tip #5: Squeegee Carpet Cleaning
As much as you may try to vacuum up all the pet hair in your house, it can stick to your carpets and upholstery with an unexpected power. When vacuuming just doesn’t cut it, it’s time to reach for a squeegee.
While this tool is designed for glass window panes, it can also dislodge pet hair and other stubborn particles from carpets and fabrics. Just squeegee your couches and carpets as you would a window. You’ll be surprised at how much pet hair you are able to remove!
Although these carpet cleaning tricks can enhance the appearance of your carpets in the short term, nothing beats regular deep cleaning done by professionals.
